Addu City Council, on Monday, announced that it would begin accepting rent payments for land plots leased out in the atoll.

According to a statement issued by the council, the change in policy was implemented under recent amendments to the Decentralisation Act, which grants city councils the right to collect land rent and fees.

Payments will be accepted from September 1 onwards.

The City Council also revealed that efforts were underway to bring any necessary amendments to agreements signed under other state bodies as per the previous administrative framework to reflect the aforementioned changes.

These land plots include industrial sites, garages, workshops and land used for business activities.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ratified the most recent amendment to the Decentralisation Act in December 2019, granting considerable financial empowerment to local councils.
