Addu Magistrate Court sentences a man to 10 years in jail for sexually abusing a minor six years ago.

He is being sentenced for abusing a 14 year old girl that lived in Addu Hulhumeedhoo. The young girl had called the man and asked him to come over because there were no adults in her house then. He had taken a ferry from another island in Addu and arrived to Hulhumeedhoo to visit her.

The girl had said in the investigation that they were in a romantic relationship.

When the police had arrived to her house the evening he was arrested, he was hiding under the sink in the kitchen. He had said he went over upon her invitation and they were together. He retracted the statement that they were together later though.

The charges were pressed based on what the girl had said in her statements for the investigation. The state had provided further evidence that supported the girl's claims as well. She had said the man had conducted sexual acts with towards her.

When the state had pressed child sexual abuse charges, the man had denied these charges and pleaded not guilty.

In the verdict issued by Judge Rafeeudheen Ahmed from the Hithadhoo Magistrate Court, he said the evidence collected through the investigation supports the claims made by the young girl. The statements made by the man in investigation can also be believed to be confessions, the judge said.

Therefore the case was closed with him being found guilty. He was sentenced to 10 years in jail on September 14.

The young girl that was involved in this case is no longer a minor.
