The total number of COVID-19 cases in Addu Atoll reached 60 on Sunday, with authorities confirming two new cases in the Hithadhoo district.

Additionally, four COVID-19 patients, consisting of three Maldivians and one expatriate, have been hospitalised.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) placed Addu City under monitoring on Saturday following the identification of the initial cases.

Efforts are currently underway to conduct random sampling in order to identify the extent of community spread in the city.

Authorities previously revealed that 341 contacts were identified in the atoll, while a total of 182 buildings have been placed under quarantine regarding the virus spread.

After a long period of recording low numbers towards the end of 2020, Maldives is now experiencing its third wave of the pandemic, with the introduction of the United Kingdom’s highly contagious virus variant.

Currently, the island nation records a total of 17,828 virus cases of which 2,315 are active cases, in addition to 15,448 recoveries and 58 deaths.
