The total number of COVID-19 cases in Addu Atoll hit 58 on Saturday, with authorities confirming five new cases in the region.
Addu Emergency Operations Centre (AEOC) revealed that the new cases had tested positive from 174 samples collected across the atoll.
Authorities have identified 341 contacts of the positive cases found in the atoll, while a total of 182 buildings have been placed under quarantine regarding the virus spread.
After a long period of recording low numbers towards the end of 2020, Maldives is now experiencing its third wave of the pandemic, with the introduction of the United Kingdom’s highly contagious virus variant.
Currently, the island nation records a total of 17,716 virus cases of which 2,360 are active cases, in addition to 15,291 recoveries and 58 deaths.
