President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has officially requested for the Maldives' to be readmitted as a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, following endorsement by the Cabinet and the Parliament.

According to the President's Office, President Solih stressed on the government's belief in protecting and establishing human rights, gender equality and sustainable development practices adding that, as a developing country, Maldives does not wish to remain segregated from other nations.

Reintegrating the country back into the Commonwealth is part of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's goals set for achievement within the first 100 days of his administration.

Maldives initially joined the Commonwealth on July 9, 1982, leaving on October 13, 2016 during the tenure of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, after spending 34 years as a member of the intergovernmental organization.

Yameen dissolved the membership claiming that the organization was meddling with the domestic affairs of the country and that there was discrimination between other member states.

Upon Maldives' departure from the Commonwealth, the organization stated that its intent was only to strengthen democracy in the country and expressed hope that Maldives would once more join the organization in the future.
