President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom announced late Thursday a new project that will connect capital Male and suburb Villimale, to develop "Villimale 2" to solve the social housing issue in Maldives.

In his address during the official ceremony held at Republic Square to celebrate the 53rd Independence Day of Maldives, the president stated that his government was yet to provide a full solution to the issue of housing and overcrowding in Male, despite many other achievements over the past five years.

Hence the government will develop "Villimale 2" as another city, along with the ongoing development of reclaimed suburb Hulhumale's second phase, he said.

While Yameen did not disclose details pertaining to the reclamation and proceedings of Villimale 2, he declared that Male City, Villimale and Gulhifalhu will be connected under the project, which would accommodate a population of 315,000.

The president vowed that, by the Independence Day of 2030, every person over the age of 18 will be provided with an apartment or land plot of no less than 1,000 square feet under this social housing programme.

Yameen went on to proclaim that research has already been completed for this project which, along with the ongoing "Hiyaa" project in Hulhumale, he described would be a "total solution" to the issue of housing.

He assured that as soon as the Sinamale Bridge being developed between Male and airport island Hulhule was complete, work would commence on a new bridge to connect Male, Villimale and Gulhifalhu.
