Maldives appoints new chief of Employment Tribunal

President Abdulla Yameen on Monday appointed Ahmed Shifau, of Gaafu Dhaal Atoll's Faresmaathoda, as the new president of the Employment Tribunal.

Shifau was appointed to the post after the tribunal's former head, Hussain Faiz Rashaad, resigned on April 26 after a tenure of over a year and half. Faiz currently a judge on the Civil Court.

Shifau was formerly serving in a senior post at Maldives Customs Services.

The Employment Tribunal was established under the Employment Act to protect the rights and obligations of employers and employees, and mediate such disputes. The authority of appointing members to the tribunal is accorded to the president.
