MP Elect for South Thinadhoo constituency Mohamed Alsan Ahmed has also joined ruling People's National Congress.

Alsan, who at just 27 years is the youngest MP Elect of the 20th People's Majlis, contested in April's Parliamentary Election as an independent candidate.

He officially joined PNC at an event held in Muleeaage today, presenting his party membership form to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

Alsan is the ninth independent MP Elect to join the ruling party in this interim period between the election and the commencement of the 20th Parliament. Now, PNC has a total of 75 members in parliament.

Additionally, Jumhoori Party's member, Maldives National Party's member and Maldives Development Alliance's two members will also be working with PNC in parliament.

As such, the ruling party's supermajority in parliament is 79 seats strong.

The recently passed Anti Defection Act states that an independent member of parliament who signs up to a party within their five year term must resign from their seat. However, the law does not specify what actions must be taken in the instance that the switch is made post-elections but prior to the member taking oath of office as a parliamentarian.

Members elected to the 20th People's Majlis will be taking their oath of office on next Tuesday, May 28.
