Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH) on Sunday, conducted Addu City's first COVID-19 diagnostic test.

This marked the first time testing for the virus was made available outside of the capital city of Male'.

The Addu Equatorial Hospital is now capable of processing between 100 to 150 samples per day.

Addu Atoll, administratively marked 'Seenu', is the second-most populous region in the country. Given its size, a number of voices within the Addu community previously raised concerns over its inability to test for the virus.

While Addu City records no community spread of COVID-19, an elderly lady under quarantine after travelling to Male' City tested positive on June 12.

In addition to Addu, authorities are working towards establishing testing capabilities in Kulhudhuffushi City.
