Opposition People's National Congress (PNC), on Wednesday, accused the current administration of sacking and threatening people's job security for politically motivated reasons.

In a statement released to address Labour Day, the party expressed concerns over workers, and called for the state to protect workers' rights in addition to treating them with fairness and within their constitutional rights.

Additionally, PNC's statement commended the efforts of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration to create job opportunities and the way he treated civil servants.

According to PNC, Yameen's administration created a record amount of job opportunities.

"[Yameen] established companies, and created new jobs in various sectors. [Yameen] prioritised Maldivians, and allocated certain posts for Maldivians only", PNC's statement read.

Moreover, the party stated that more job opportunities must be created with the increasing population of Maldives. However, according to PNC, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih failed to deliver on his pledges to the people regarding employment within the five months he has been in office.

PNC further asserted that increase in the number of unemployed individuals being cast aside in society leading to social discord was unacceptable.

"Therefore, we call upon the 19th parliament, and current administration to find a solution for these matters."

The then-opposition lodged many complaints against former President Yameen's administration stating that staff of government-run companies were forced into political work. After his inauguration, President Solih also reinstated many individuals who were sacked for political reasons during the previous government.
