Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom declared late Saturday that the accusations of working to topple the government made against the shadow minister of Maldives United Opposition (MUO) Adam Azim are groundless and false.

In a statement, former President Maumoon expressed his disbelief over Adam Azim being regarded a danger to the community, saying that Azim would not act in any manner that could prove harmful to the people.

The former president, who is currently abroad, claimed that Azim’s arrest is politically motivated. He reiterated that the accusations against and arrests of political figures who censure the government are deliberate acts to obstruct the opposition’s move to reform the nation.

Asserting that the opposition coalition is not working to illegally overthrow the administration, former President Maumoon called on the authorities to release Adam Azim and other jailed political leaders.

Adam Azim, who is the younger brother of jailed former Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim, was arrested early Thursday over allegedly attempting to topple the government and spreading misinformation about the judiciary of the Maldives. The Criminal Court has remanded him for ten days.
