Actor Mohamed Yunan charged with child sexual abuse has been arrested again after High Court ruled he was released unlawfully.

He was arrested under a court order from Hulhumale’ Magistrate Court.

In 2020, Yunan and his wife Aiminath Rihula were arrested and detained until their trial is over for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor. Two years later, in 2022, Rihula was placed under house arrest.

Last month, Hulhumale’ Court had granted Yunan conditional release as well.

However, when the state appealed this case with the High Court, they ruled that he had been wrongly released, the Prosecutor General's Office had filed an application at Hulhumale' Magistrate's Court seeking the re-detention of Yunan. The request was made because Yunan had violated the conditions laid down by the court while releasing him from custody, the office said.

Mihaaru news reported that even though Yunan had to abide by the condition to remain in home unless to go out for essential purposes, he had been leaving his home. He was additionally subjected to conditions such as not travelling without the court’s permission and to inform the place of his residence to the court.

The High Court decision on the appeal filed by the state, said Hulhumale’ Court decision to release Yunan was not because the circumstances surrounding his detention had changed, but rather after reviewing the dangers he posed to society. Even if he was granted bail with conditions, the conditions imposed by the court were not sufficient to ensure the safety and security of the community, the court said.

Noting these factors, the three-judge bench ruled that the decision to release Yunnan was unlawful and therefore overruled it. They additionally said if the state requests the Hulhumale' Court to arrest Yunan, the court will have to make decision within seven days.
