Police on Monday stated that the body of the Ukranian tourist, who was killed during a bus accident in the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale' on May 6, would be transported back to her country later in the day.

The 31-year-old woman's mother arrived in Maldives earlier to collect the body which was kept in the mortuary in capital Male'.

The driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and inadvertently ran over the tourist near the newly opened local market at 0630 hours on May 6. Although no other passengers sustained any injuries, the woman died upon impact.

MTCC assisted the victim's family with arrangements for their stay and matters related to transporting her body back to Ukraine. The family contacted the Ukranian Embassy in New Delhi to gain clearance to transport the body.

The Criminal Court recently remanded the bus driver, an employee of state-owned Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), for seven days.
