Former midfielder of the Maldives national football team, Mohamed Arif (Baka) has begun receiving treatment at the hospital due to a sudden illness.

Arif, aged 38 had embarked on the worship of Hajj last season and returned to the country last weekend. He is currently admitted at the intensive care unit at ADK Hospital.

A source close to Arif spoke with local media, Mihaaru News and revealed that his condition was caused by extreme fever.

"[He] had very high fever and began losing strength from his body. [He is] currently on ventilator." said the source.

"Doctors assure [his condition is] slowly improving. No one can go in [to visit] because he is in the ICU."

Arif had abstained from playing in the top division during the last two seasons due to injuries and fitness issues. However, he had assured at the time that he has no intention to cease the sport.

The midfielder had played an important role in securing Maldives' win during the SAFF Championships held in Maldives and Sri Lanka on 2008 and had also played in the Miami League. He was last seen playing for the United Victory in the first division.

Football experts generally title Arif as the best defensive midfielder the country has produced in its entire history. Native to Seenu atoll Hithadhoo, Arif had initially begun his football career with Club IFC - which was run by Addu businessmen - at the ripe age of 19 in 2004.
