The no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, which was scheduled to take place on Sunday, has been removed from the parliament's agenda, citing the inability to proceed with the motion.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), holding a majority in parliament, has initiated a no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla with the endorsement of 50 parliamentarians. As per the regulations, the motion was scheduled for Sunday, following 14-day notice period requirement.

However, in a letter addressed to the member who submitted the motion, the Secretary General of Parliament, Fathimath Niusha, stated that due to the delayed formation of standing committees following the change in party composition, the time for the debate on the motion to remove Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla could not be determined.

According to parliament regulations, the General Committee is responsible for determining the number of members participating in the debate on the motion and allocating the time for their speeches.

The committee will also decide the allotted time for both defending Eva and for Eva to speak in her own defense.

Niusha said that once the duration of the debate is determined, the resolution regarding the no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla will be added to the parliamentary agenda.

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed said that the formation of the standing committees in the parliament has experienced a delay of over two weeks due to disagreements between the parties represented in the parliament.

However, MDP members have accused Speaker Nasheed of intentionally delaying the formation of committees in order to obstruct Eva's case.

MDP decided to remove Eva from the post of Deputy-Speaker of Parliament after she left the party along with 12 other members and started working to form a new political party. The party has also moved a no-confidence motion against Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

Following Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla's resignation from MDP along with 12 other members, to establish a new political party, MDP has made the decision to remove Eva from her position as Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

The party has also submitted a no-confidence motion against Speaker Nasheed endorsed by 56 MPs to remove him from his post.
