The Maldives has welcomed over half a million tourists within the first three months of 2023.

According to the latest statistics from the Maldives Ministry of Tourism, the total number of tourist arrivals as of March 27 stood at 505,071, which is a 21.5 percent increase compared to the same period in 2022. The Maldives attracted a total of 415,690 tourists during the first quarter of 2022.

The Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, acknowledged the contributions and support from the tourism industry stakeholders and service providers in reaching this milestone. He added that the current tourist arrival momentum was on track to reach the annual target of 1.8 million tourists in 2023.

While the Maldives welcomed over half a million tourists in the 2023 first quarter, tourist arrivals from March 1 to 27 stood at 154,657, which is a 14.6 percent increase from the corresponding period of last year. Tourist arrivals for the same period in 2022 reached 134,914.

In January and February of this year, there were 172,499 and 177,915 tourist arrivals, respectively.

From March 1 to 27, the daily arrival average stood at 5,728; annually, it is at 6,475. The average duration of stay in March so far stands at 7.8 days, and annually at 8 days.

Russia has maintained its top tourist market rank with over 60,000 arrivals so far, while India is ranked second with over 50,000 arrivals.

Tourist arrivals to the Maldives have observed a month-on-month and an annual increment this year. The resumption of the Chinese tourist market has contributed strongly to elevating the arrival numbers. China, which had been the top source market for the Maldives pre-pandemic, resumed its arrivals after a three-year hiatus.
