Two people were injured on Thursday night when a glass pallet fell on them in a dangerous incident at the commercial harbour in capital Male'.

According to Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), one of the two individuals was stuck under the fallen pallet while the other was rushed to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

The former has since been rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment as well.

Authorities stated that the incident was reported around 1956 hrs, and that MNDF's Fire and Rescue, along with police officers and paramedics, were on the scene.

MNDF Fire & Rescue work to rescue the MPL staff trapped under the fallen glass pallet.

Local media Mihaaru reported that the injured individuals were involved in unloading the glass pallet from a cargo container with a forklift, inside the commercial harbour at Maldives Ports Ltd (MPL).

Reportedly, the victims were inside the container when the pallet toppled onto them, trapping one underneath. The latter was saved after the rescue team sliced open one of the walls of the container.

According to witness reports as per Mihaaru, the glass pallets were approximately five feet in length, and the individual caught underneath suffered serious injuries.

There have been intermittent reports of dangerous accidents at the Male' Commercial Harbour. The latest such incident took place in September 2017, when an MPL staff's leg was caught in a container while loading cargo containers to a freighter vessel, resulting in amputation.
