Male' City Council has announced yesterday that it is seeking interested applicants to demolish the existing stage at the Carnival area and build a new stage.

The council said that applicants must be willing to build the new stage with their own supplies. Bid applications are now being accepted for the project.

Deadline for application is December 16. Bidding will be on the same day at the offices of the Male' City Council.

Maldivian companies, partnerships and those with local investment and commercial permits are eligible to apply.

The selected applicant must demolish the existing stage and dispose the ensuing waste.

The concept for the new stage must be developed, and permits must be sought by them after drawing up engineering and other drawings. They must also complete the structure and finishing work of the new stage, as well as complete all electrical and plumbing work required for the stage.

Male' City Council decided in July to redevelop the Carnival area to modern standards. Mayor Azim, at the time, expressed concerns about the deteriorating state of the existing structures at carnival, raising concerns that they could become a threat to public safety.

Alimas Carnival was initially opened in 2004 to mark the 75th anniversary of Majeedhiya School. The stage has since been used for music shows and political rallies.
