Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated that despite their loss in yesterday's parliamentary election, they will remain steadfast in their role of holding the government accountable and ensuring that democratic principles are upheld.

Yesterday's election saw ruling People's National Congress (PNC) winning a supermajority with 71 seats in the upcoming 20th People's Majlis. The interim results indicate that MDP, which holds majority in the 19th People's Majlis, won a total of 12 seats in this election.

In a statement released by MDP, they congratulated the candidates who succeeded in yesterday's election, and called on them to uphold democratic values and work for the people's benefit.

"As on one of the key responsibilities of parliamentarians is to hold the government accountable, this party is confident that all who won [yesterday's] election will work to do so without hesitation," the statement read.
