President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has declared that September 12 will henceforth be marked as the National Heritage Day.

The President came to this decision after deliberations with his cabinet on a proposal presented by Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Yumna Maumoon.

The Minister proposed September 12 as the National Heritage Day based on the fact that on that day, in 2019, the incumbent government had ratified the Maldives Cultural Heritage Act. She noted that prior to this, the lack of appropriate legislation had been one of the biggest challenges faces in protecting and preserving heritage sites and artifacts.

She also noted that the establishment of a National Heritage Day would significantly contribute to the efforts to pass on the country's heritage to future generations.12
