The Civil Court, during last week, ordered Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) to pay the MVR 125,000 owed to the Elections Commission in fines, within a period of six months, starting from January.

Both the parties came to an agreement on the aforementioned decision during the dispute resolution process in court.

Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party, currently operating under the leadership of Kaafu Atoll Kaashidhoo’s parliamentary representative Abdulla Jabir, was fined over the party’s failure to submit its audit reports for the past three years, as well as failing to pay the fines imposed due to this.

DRP was fined with MVR 50,000 in 2016, MVR 25,000 in 2017 and MVR 50,000 in 2019. Elections Commission took matters to court after the party failed to make the payment on three different occasions.

In addition to the payment due for EC, DRP also has pending payments for several companies. The party addressed this issue, adding that cases will be lodged against former heads of the party to hold them accountable.

DRP, established in former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s presidency, was one of the most popular political parties in its prime.

Gayoom contested for the first multi-party elections held in Maldives on DRP’s ticket. However, following the loss of the election, the party separated into factions and Gayoom left to create Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
