Planning Minister assures Addu land reclamation following schedule

The Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mr. Mohamed Aslam has claimed that the planned land reclamation project in Addu City will proceed according to schedule.

The minister had made the affirmation while responding to the queries of Maradhoo constituency lawmaker Mr. Ibrahim Shareef during Tuesday's parliamentary sitting.

While noting that project mobilization is currently active, the minister assured that the preliminary works of the project is expected to commence on June 2022 as planned.

Maldives government contracted Netherlands' offshore construction company Van Oord for the reclamation project. State signed with the contractor earlier on 27th March.

In addition to this, the project will involve an expenditure of MVR1.3 billion for the preservation of the environment around the planned reclaimed area.

Under the project, the contractor is expected to reclaim a total of 194.3 hectares of land within a period of 18 months.

The contractor will reclaim 90 hectares of land from Hithadhoo and 76 hectares of land from Maradhoo along with further reclamation of 25 hectares from Addu lagoon for the creation of three slips of islands, each spanning 8.3 hectares of area - for tourism purposes.

In addition to this, 3.3 hectares of further area will be reclaimed for the embankment of the 4-lane link road.

The project further includes construction of 4,700 meters and 3,800 meters of rock boulder revetments in Hithadhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo respectively.

Moreover, the contractor will install 1,575 meters of geo-bag revetment around the link road, as well as another revetment spanning 4,140 meters across the three islands that will reclaimed from the lagoon.

Van Oord is expected to use its HAM 318 dredgers for land reclamation, while 6.9 million cubic meters of sand will be utilized for the total reclamation.
