The Parliament on Monday passed to appoint former Director-General of Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) Fathuhulla Jameel as the new Commissioner General of Taxation.

Fathuhulla was appointed to the position with the unanimous vote of 82 members present in Sunday's parliament session.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih advised the Parliament to appoint either Fathuhulla or Maldives Custom Service's Assistant Commissioner Ismail Nashid to the position of Taxation's CG.

However, the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Affairs decided to appoint Fathuhulla after conducting interviews with both candidates.

Fathuhulla joined MIRA in 2003 as a Revenue Officer and was later promoted to Senior Revenue Officer. He was then appointed as the Director-General in 2010.

He left MIRA to join telecom giant Dhiraagu in 2016 and filled the post of Tax, Risk and Compliance Manager until now.

Fathuhulla holds a Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) diploma in addition to an honours degree in Applied Accounting.

Moreover, he is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) with the FCCA fellowship title, which is earned through 10 years of experience.

The parliament on Sunday also passed to appoint Asma Shafeeu from Ihavandhoo, Haa Alif Atoll, as the Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation, with 81 votes.

President Solih ratified the amendments brought to the Tax Administration Act on September 12. The amendment states that two new individuals must be appointed for the top positions of MIRA within 30 days of ratification.

However, the deadline was reached before new appointments were made for these positions.

The former Commissioner General of Taxation was Yazeedh Mohamed while Hassan Zareer previously filled the position of Deputy Commissioner-General.
