An account under the username 'Ablor Myad Yosef' made the threat, Police said, confirming that the matter is being investigated as a serious case.
The threat was made in a comment on a live video of the President speaking at the 79th United Nations General Assembly.
The account has over 9000 followers, and has frequently made threats against several individuals. One such incidence is where the account has comment "needs [your] throat slashed" under a post by former MP for Madaveli Hussain Firushan.
Although the account has a profile photo attached, it has not been confirmed whether this photo is of the user. Police are working on identifying the person behind the account.
There has been previous attacks on Maldives' presidents as well. A knife attack had been attempted on former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on a trip to an island during his administration. There was an explosion on former President Abdulla Yameen's speed boat, and former President Nasheed was victim to a bombing attack after his administration had ended, and he had been filling the position of Parliament Speaker.
