Three additional countries of Europe, including Spain, has decided to recognize Palestine as a sovereign and independent State.

During an interview given to the Spanish Radio on Thursday, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell declared that Spain, together with Ireland and Slovenia plans to formally recognize Palestine as an independent sovereign state on May 21.

The Slovenian government stated that a motion will be passed to recognize the Palestinian state and an official request will be lodged to the parliament around the middle of June.

“And probably, after that, there will be more, because Belgium was considering it, but has delayed the decision as it seeks more countries to join it,” Borrell said.

Amid the killing of thousands of Palestinian civilians since October 7 due to the continuous onslaught of attacks over the country by Israeli military forces, many European countries have begun changing their views on conferring sovereignty to Palestine.

However, Germany and France, two of the most powerful countries in Europe has resolutely denied to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state. These two countries persist in their belief that Palestine can only be conferred sovereignty as part of a permanent peace treaty with Israel.

The Palestinian Authority had previously affirmed that 137 of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has recognized Palestinian as an independent sovereign State.
