Government signs agreement with two hospitals in India to provide service under the government's health care scheme Aasandha for Maldivians.

Aasandha is the state healthcare scheme that provides universal healthcare to all Maldivians from public hospitals and healthcare centers in the country. It also covers a certain percentage of the fees from private institutions and 45 healthcare providers overseas, including 36 from India.

Aasandha signed with Dr. Rela Institute and Medical Center on Wednesday, and with children's and obstetrics hospital Rainbow Children's Medicare Hospital on October 17.

Both these hospitals are located in Chennai, India.

While the state is increasing the number of foreign hospitals Aasandha is accepted, MVR 731 million has been allocated for Aasandha in 2022's state budget. This is an increase from how much was allocated for this year.

MVR 717 million was allocated for Aasandha in 2021.

The largest amount of the state budget allocated for social security is spent on Aasandha each year. A total of MVR 3.1 billion has been allocated for social security in next year's budget.
