Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam said that discussions are underway with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to acquire land in Hulhumale' instead of Kanduoiygiri in Kaafu atoll.

Kanduoiygiri, currently used by Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Ltd (MIFCO) to process fish products, faces challenges such as a shallow harbor and a damaged seawall, making it difficult for vessels to anchor and the facility to be utilized properly despite having a high quality fisheries complex.

During the protest by yellowfin tuna fishermen, Minister Shiyam highlighted the impracticality of using Kanduoiygiri for fish weighing and unloading.

Therefore, the government aims to relocate the fisheries complex to Hulhumale', he said.

“We are negotiating with HDC to exchange Kanduoiygiri for land in Hulhumale',” Shiyam stated.

A MIFCO official told Mihaaru News that discussions were held with the Ministry and relevant authorities about relocating the facility to Hulhumale'.

The facility is being moved to Hulhumale' to address access and operational difficulties at Kanduoiygiri, he said.

If the fisheries complex is relocated to Hulhumale' it will offer many conveniences and speed up operations, he added.
