Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been contracted for the build and design of the road development project in Alifu Alifu atoll Ukulhas.

Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (MNPHI) contracted MTCC for the project, for which signing took place on Thursday, October 19.

Director General of MNPHI Fathimath Shana Shafeeq signed the contract agreement on behalf of the state, while MTCC Chief Executive Officer Adam Azim signed on behalf of the contractor.

Project scope includes laying asphalt on 2.6 kilometers of road, installation of drainage systems. Additionally, the contractor will install street lights.

MTCC is contracted to complete the project under 15 months, while project value is reported at MVR 59.4 million.

Ukulhas is a popular local tourism destination from Alif Alif atoll. The atoll is one of the most prominent areas in guesthouse tourism in the Maldives. Moreover, the island reports 34 guesthouse properties currently at operational capacity.

MTCC identified the island's main plight lied with the roads which consists potholes and ditches scattered across the island. Lack of drainage results in extensive puddles and severe flooding as well.

The island already consists of a functioning sewerage and water system, while the road development project will enhance urbanization of the island.

Additional of Ukulhas road development project, MTCC was contracted with the airport development project of Faafu atoll Magoodhoo. The project is valued at MVR231.5 million.
