Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid on Monday officially inaugurated the Ukulhas Convention Centre in Ukulhas, Alif Alif Atoll.

The Minister attended the ceremony as a Special Envoy of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The Convention Centre is funded jointly by the governments of Maldives and India.

The centre was built within a month as the venue for the Ukulhas Tech Fair, International Workshop on Applied Artificial Intelligence 2019 and Software, Knowledge, Information Management and Applications (SKIMA 2019), which kicked off the same day.

During this visit, the minister attended the Ukulhas Tech Fair, observed the stalls and interacted with participants.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister Shahid acknowledged and thanked President Solih for his commitment to the project.

He then congratulated the Council and people of Ukulhas for this achievement.

Additionally, he noted the hard work done by the Ministry of Planning and Infrastructure. He went on to thank India for the aid provided for the project.

"I thank the government of India for the generous assistance provided for this Centre. I wish to especially highlight the important role that Indian Ambassador to the Maldives HE Sunjay Sudir for his stewardship in coordinating the implementation of projects in the economic package."

The AI Maldives Workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of applied artificial intelligence (AI) to exchange the latest developments in the field. It is part of the 2019 IEEE sponsored International Conference on SKIMA.

The tech fair will host the latest technological innovations by Maldivian institutions, companies and individuals.
