The Maldivian government has opened applications for first-time marriages to take place on the Sinamale Bridge being developed between capital Male and airport island Hulhule.

The state declared that it will bear the financial costs of catering and photography services for the weddings. The government had initially also planned on providing for the bride and groom’s wardrobe and grooming, but has since withdrawn the clause.

Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure's spokesperson, Ahmed Fazaal, revealed the reason behind withdrawing the clause was due to an unexpected influx of individuals interested in holding their weddings on the bridge.

A sum of MVR 32,000 Rufiyaa per wedding had previously been allotted for the bride and groom’s apparel needs.

The housing ministry has announced five themes for the weddings to be held on the Sinamale Bridge – Maldivian, Chinese, Floral, Sunset and Vintage.

Each wedding can comprise of a maximum of 50 invitees, with weddings running from September 1 - 5.

The housing ministry has declared that it will accept applications till the August 13, further mentioning applicants to present the Family Court’s Marriage application along with relevant documents to the ministry.

For couples without marriage counselling by the court, the ministry has affirmed its decision to arrange the couples-sessions via the ministry.

The Sinamale Bridge is due open late this month.
