Woman accused of smuggling over 600 grams of drugs to Maldives has escaped the charges on Sunday as it was unclear how the police had transported the confiscated drugs to the laboratory.

Over 600 grams of drugs were found in the luggage of a Maldivian woman entering Maldives via air travel in May of 2016. She was charged of smuggling drugs as per the law.

Criminal Court had decided that it was unclear how the confiscated drugs were transported to the laboratory upon examining the investigatioit was not clear from the documents how the drugs were circulated from one police to another as well.

The ruling states that while the state is required to present evidence to prove that the drugs analysed by the police were found in the defendant's luggage, the state has not submitted any documents to prove it until the case had concluded. Therefore, the charges of drug trafficking were not proven beyond reasonable doubt.

Some other mistakes in the investigation were also noted in the sentence. The woman was taken to a guesthouse in a controlled delivery operation to find a man that would receive the smuggled drugs. The judge noted that a female police officer was not present with the suspect in the guesthouse even though their presence was required under law. He additionally noted that another person arrived in the Maldives with the accused woman, but the operation was carried out without arresting the second suspect. o
