Maldives government on Thursday awarded the projects to establish a sewerage system in Alif Alif Atoll's Mathiveri, and a water supply network in Faafu Atoll's Nilandhoo to a renowned Sri Lankan construction firm.

The two projects were awarded to Edward and Christie in a ceremony held at the Ministry of Environment and Energy. The agreement was signed by Minister Thoriq Ibrahim and Edward and Christie's Managing Director Christie Arawwala.

According to the minister, the total cost of the projects amounts to over MVR 30 million, with MVR 13.6 million for the sewerage system in Mathiveri and MVR 16.7 million for the water supply network in Nilandhoo.

Thoriq revealed that the projects were awarded to Edward and Christie under the labour contract model, and that State Trading Organisation (STO) was tasked with providing the resources and equipment required for the projects.

In his address, the minister highlighted that the current administration has so far established sewerage systems in 22 islands, while work is underway to establish them in 42 more. Thoriq further noted that previously only six islands, including capital Male, had water supply networks. However water storage systems have since been established in 36 islands, while various works are underway to complete water supply networks in 64 islands.

The water supply network in Nilandhoo would include an RO plant, rain water storage system, and rain water distribution network.
