Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) coalition candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged develop the first ever airport in Alifu Alifu atoll.
According to Dr. Muizzu, the atoll’s airport will be developed in Mathiveri after reclaiming land from the island’s lagoon. The PPM/PNC coalition candidate made the remarks amid his campaign tour to the atoll.
Alifu Alifu atoll is among the few administrative atolls in the Maldives without a regional airport, however, it is also one of the most prominent atolls in terms of local tourism activities with multiple guesthouse properties scattered across its islands.
Dr. Muizzu emphasized the significance of having an airport in the atoll, as it would significantly enhance tourism activities and facilitate the smooth transfer of guests. He added that an air gateway would not only improve the convenience of travel but also contribute to the economic growth of the atoll.
The land reclamation will be at a scale to accommodate sufficient land area for the island’s use including other developmental projects including housing initiatives, said Dr. Muizzu.
“There’s no land here, it’s insufficient. We have planned to reclaim land to cater towards future housing initiatives,” Dr. Muizzu added.
Dr. Muizzu pledged to continue the legacy of his PPM predecessor, former President Abdulla Yameen, by ensuring the continuity of developmental projects and their timely completion.
