Mathiveri under monitoring over 2 suspected virus cases

National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) announced late Monday that monitoring measures have been enacted on the island of Mathiveri, Alif Alif Atoll.

Communications Undersecretary at the President's Office, Mabrook Abdul Azeez made the announcement at the press conference held regarding the coronavirus outbreak in Maldives.

He revealed that Mathiveri was placed under monitoring after two foreign nationals on the island began to exhibit COVID-19 like symptoms. Travelling to and from Mathiveri will be prohibited until the measures are lifted.

In addition to Mathiveri, authorities also enacted monitoring measures on the resort Gili Lankanfushi the same day, after a Maldivian employee began to exhibit symptoms. The local is currently under home-isolation until authorities receive their test results.

The resorts aaaVeee Nature's Paradise and Four Seasons Landaagiravaru were also placed under monitoring on Sunday night after foreign nationals began to exhibit symptoms.

Currently there are 13 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Maldives, including a tourist couple on a liveaboard, two cases from Anantara Dhigurah, five foreign nationals from Kuredu Island Resort as well as two foreign citizens from Sandies Bathala and Kuramathi Maldives each. No locals have tested positive for the virus as of yet.

Maldives announced a state of public health emergency last Thursday, under which the government has implemented several measures. This includes travel restrictions to and from resorts and banning guesthouses and hotels in the Greater Male' region from accepting more tourist bookings for a period of 14 days.

Maldives also banned entry from Spain and parts of Germany and France, in addition to China, Italy, Iran, Bangladesh and four regions of South Korea.
