A fire burned through part of a guest house in Mathiveri, Alif Alif Atoll, on Sunday night.

Locals put out the fire that broke out in Casa Mia, a two-story guesthouse. The fire broke out and spread to three adjacent rooms on the top floor, severely burning them by the time the blaze was controlled.

According to a councilor from Mathiveri, no visitors were in the building when the fire broke out, as the guesthouse was closed for renovation. Work was underway in 25 rooms, while reconstruction had already been completed in 25 rooms.

"The only people living there were the workers. Three rooms in the top floor caught fire. The fire spread so rapidly because a lot of wood and palm leaves were used in construction", the councilor said.

The councilor revealed to local media Mihaaru that the guesthouse was scheduled to open at the end of April.

There have been talks and accusations that the blaze was deliberately set by some people, however, it has yet to be proven.

The family of Abdulla Jabir, who was elected as the MP of Kaashidhoo constituency in the parliamentary elections held on Saturday, reportedly holds shares in Casa Mia.
