Parliament has decided to hold an extraordinary sitting for the appointment of a new Prosecutor General after Hussain Shameem was dismissed from the position last night.

The Prosecutor General's Act states that if the position becomes vacant, a new appointment has to be made within 30 days.

Nominations for the post have to be submitted by the President. This will then be reviewed by a Parliamentary committee before being posed for a vote on the Parliament floor.

Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim, who presided over last night's sitting, said that two extraordinary sittings will be held to carry out the procedures for the appointment of a Prosecutor General. One will be to announce in Parliament the names nominated by the President, and then to vote once the committee comes to a decision.

Dates for these sittings have not been announced yet.
