A councillor for Omadhoo, Alif Dhaalu Atoll, was arrested for repeatedly threatening the island’s health centre staff.
Police confirmed that a 41-year-old male was arrested in Omadhoo under a court order. They provided no further details.
However, local reports say that the councillor intimidated the health centre staff when they refused to provide 'Aasandha' for his infant child, under the ID card of the mother.
Aasandha is the national healthcare insurance scheme developed to provide free healthcare to all Maldivian citizens.
The extent of his actions had left staff hesitant to report to work, reports claim.
