The Met Office issued the orange alert for the area from 12:50 PM to 3:00 PM today. The office stated that heavy rain with thunder and flooding is expected in the islands of these atolls during these hours.
A yellow alert was issued for the area shortly before the orange alert. The alert level was raised about 15 minutes later.
In the Maldives' weather warning system, alerts are issued as White, Yellow, Orange, Red, and Green (when storms clear). An orange alert is issued when rainfall of 90 millimeters within one hour and winds of 63 miles per hour are expected.
Last Friday, an orange alert was also issued for a large area of the Maldives warning of potential flooding. Male' suffered the most damage from that day's rain. There was severe flooding in Male', with significant water damage to homes and shops.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) today, the damage to homes in Male' from last Friday's severe storm amounts to 2.2 million rufiyaa. This was reportedly the most damaging storm to affect Male' so far.
