The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard on Monday rescued four crew members who were stranded at sea after their cargo boat caught fire and capsized near Laamu atoll Maavashu.
The boat, named "Noor-2," was on its way from Raa Atoll to Robinson Island Resort in Gaafu Alifu atoll.
There was a local man from Hulhudhoo ward in Addu City and three foreigners on board when the incident occurred at around 7:15 a.m.
The Coast Guard reached the spot after the boat had already submerged. They did, however, manage to save all of the crew members who were spotted in the sea six nautical miles south of Maavashu.
The crew members were then taken to the Regional Hospital in Laamu atoll Gan for treatment.
According to the hospital's deputy CEO Mohammed Shiyam, the crew members suffered minor burns. One of them sustained more burns than the rest, but his condition is stable.
"They were all very tired after having had to swim for a long time. But they are in good condition and are being treated at the hospital," he said.
