Maldivians shine at International Karate competition

Maldivian Karatekas participating in the Gima-Ha International Karate Kumite Championship 2019, achieved podium finishes as seven obtained gold finishes and one secured a silver placement.

The competition hosted in Sri Lanka saw the participation of over 600 individuals from four South-Asian countries.

- Medalists -

Gold:

- Ahmed Fazeel

- Rashiya Mohamed

- Aishath Thanee

- Haisham Ali

- Zuhayr Ibrahim

- Ahmed Rivaj

- Mohamed Nuh Rilwan

Silver:

- Ahmed Maail Shiyam

The Maldivian contingent was part of the Karate Academy 'Shotokan Ryu Karate Do Association' which is based in Maldives and affiliated with the 'Japan Gima-Ha Shotokan Ryu Association G.A.T Livera Karate Foundation - Sri Lanka'.

Within the last two years, Maldives had considerable success within the field of Karate, earning nine gold medals, seven silver medals and one bronze medal in 2017. Local karatekas secured two gold medals in 2018.

Shihan Rivoi Prasanna, the National Coach, started conducting Karate classes in Maldives during 2013.
