Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) on Thursday declared their support for 27 candidates from Jumhooree Party (JP).

During a joint press conference held by opposition parties, PPM and PNC revealed their decision to support candidates contesting from Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and some independent candidates as well.

Some of the candidates supported by PPM and PNC include JP leader and Parliament Speaker Gasim Ibrahim, former Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim, MP Abdulla Riyaz, former Youth Minister Iruthisham Adam, former VP Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and other notable memebers of JP.

From JP, 43 candidates will contest in the upcoming parliamentary elections to be held on April 6.

The opposition parties had on a previous occasion declared that considering the current political situation in the country, Qasim would be the best fit for president.

Meanwhile, JP is still a member of the coalition that came together to contest in the Presidential Elections held in September 2018, against Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who is from PPM.
