A Chinese expatriate died on Saturday, after falling from a building being developed under the ‘Hiyaa’ Housing Scheme on Phase Two of reclaimed suburb Hulhumale’.
Maldives Police Service reported that the incident took place around 0830 hours. Police further revealed that the expatriate worker fell from the ninth floor onto the second floor, of the sixth tower.
The body of the expatriate is currently in Hulhumale’ Hospital.
The 25-storey towers being constructed under the ‘Hiyaa’ Social Housing Scheme are developed by foreign companies.
Recently, incidents of individuals suffering injuries due to falling, or being struck by falling objects from construction sites have increased. A Bangladeshi expatriate died in a similar incident on February 18, 2019. The 44-year-old, who was an employee working on site, died upon being hit by a falling brick from a building under construction in Hulhumale’.
There is no information that the government has charged any negligent parties regarding this incident as of yet.
Additionally, a 9-year-old Bangladeshi girl succumbed to her injuries last December after being hit by a cement bag that fell from a construction site contracted to W Construction Pvt Ltd in capital Male'.
The state charged senior employees of W Construction with negligence in regards to this case. The company was also fined MVR 500,000 by Male' City Council.
