Passenger killed in cargo boat fire

A fire on a cargo boat 'Ravaana' in Faafu Atoll on Monday morning resulted in the death of a 62-year-old passenger.

Fire and Rescue services of Maldives National Defence Force arrived at the scene to control the flames after the Coast Guard was notified of the incident at approximately 0445 hours.

Fire and Rescue rushed Mohamed Ahmed of Fuvahmulah to Nilandhoo hospital in Faafu Atoll. The 62-year-old passed away while undergoing treatment. He was reportedly unconscious when he was brought to the hospital.

MNDF reported that the 16 people aboard the ship, consisting of seven locals and nine expatriates, jumped ship when 'Ravaanaa' caught fire. The passengers were picked up by another boat travelling in the region.

According to MNDF, the remaining passengers were uninjured and safely transported to Hulhudhoo in Faafu Atoll via sea ambulance.

'Ravaanaa' was the only cargo boat based in Fuvahmulah and had been en route to Vaanee, Dhaalu Atoll, after departing from the capital city of Male' when it caught fire. The boat was damaged beyond repair.
