Maldives National University (MNU) has accepted 37 students into the first batch of its MBBS programme conducted by the university's Medicine School.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor of MNU, Aishath Shaheen, stated that candidates who matched the qualifications were chosen from a pool of more than 60 applicants, and interviewed. As evidenced by the number of applications, the course, to which MNU allocated 50 seats, received a good response.

MNU has stated that the program will commence at the earliest opportunity, even though they previously announced that it would begin last September.

The five-year program, which carries a monthly course fee of MVR 15,000 (USD 1,000), is the first ever MBBS course conducted in Maldives.

The MBBS programme is to be conducted with a syllabus from National University of Malaysua (UKM), under a contract signed between the two universities. Under the terms of the contract, UKM will also conduct annual training programmes for local lecturers.

Despite originally set to be conducted at the newly developed 25-storey Dharumvantha Hospital, the MBBS course will commence at the MNU medical lab due to a shortage of equipment.
