Stakeholders of Velaa Private Island Resort in Noonu Atoll announced on Saturday that they are donating a package containing equipment to be used for containing the pandemic to Maldives' ongoing COVID-19 response.
The items being gifted by stakeholders of Velaa Resort's stakeholders includes:
- 10,000 testing kits
- 5 ventilators
- 100,000 face masks
- 200 respirators
- 500 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits
According to a spokesperson from Velaa Private Island, the items will arrive to Maldives on a private jet carrying two of the resorts' stakeholders, Jiri Smejc and Daniel Kretinsky.
Although Kretinsky had tested positive for COVID-19 during March in Czech Republic, Velaa Resort assured that he was returning to Maldives after receiving treatment and was declared completely cured from the disease.
Local media Mihaaru reported that other assistants will also arrive in the private jet in addition to the stakeholders. They will be based at the resort.
Velaa Private Island Resort, famous in the hospitality industry for their notable treatment of employees, is providing full pay for their staff in addition to financial assistance, during the current period of economic regression brought on by pandemic-related travel restrictions griding worldwide tourism to an abrupt halt. The resort's decision to retain pay comes at a time when many other hotels and resorts have terminated staff or and placed employees on mandatory unpaid leave.
Maldives now records 527 confirmed, 507 active cases of COVID-19 and a total of 18 recoveries. The country recorded its first virus death, an 83-year-old local female, on Wednesday evening.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 3.5 million people and claimed over 248,302 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 1.1 million people have recovered.
