Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid on Friday discussed the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic with his counterpart from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, via a telephone call.

According to the circular released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both ministers highlighted the initiatives taken by their respective countries to curb the spread of COVID-19 and reviewed areas of on-going development between the two, further deliberating over any "urgent action" required to minimise the socio-economic impacts of the virus.

During the call, Shahid commended the UAE government for its response in combatting the virus, including a large number of its population being tested, which according to the minister, "has significantly enhanced the government’s ability in containing the spread of the virus in the UAE".

Minister Shahid also conveyed his appreciation for the "generous support" provided by the UAE to Maldives throughout the years.
