Alzheimer's Society of Maldives (ASM) was officially inagurated on Thursday at a ceremony held at Treetop Hospital in the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale'.

ASM is spearheaded by the the family and caregivers of Mohamed Aboobakuru (Baadee Lhathuthu), a senior citizen with Alzheimer's disease. Prior to his retirement, Aboobakuru served in the Maldives National Security Service.

The newly registered organization aims to promote awareness concerning Alzheimer's disease and related medical conditions as well as providing support to individuals or families struggling with the disease. ASM will also urge the government to designate Alzheimer's disease as a major health priority and conduct research to identify better means of care.

In order to increase public awreness, ASM will hold media campaigns, awareness programs and public lectures throughout the country. While the NGO will host activities for Alzheimer's patients, it will also provide training and psychological support to caregivers. Additionally, ASM will participate in international conferences held regarding Alzheimers disease.

In the future, ASM aims to establish a day care and information centre for both patients and caregivers.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister of State for Health Dr Shah Abdulla Mahir stated that "The government will work with NGOs to formulate policies to provide a support network for people suffering from this disease. We will also extend support to NGOs increase awareness within the community".
