Judicial Service Commission (JSC), on Wednesday, decided to suspend Supreme Court's Judge Abdulla Didi and Family Court's Chief Judge Hassan Saeed.

At a news conference held on Wednesday, JSC Director Hassan Zaheen stated that they decided to suspend Judge Abdulla Didi due to his ongoing police investigation, which Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed had also reported.

“Maldives Police Service is investigating the same matter”, said Zaheen.

Nasheed informed JSC that USD 1 million was transferred to the bank account of Didi’s wife. Judge Didi had countered that all assets in any accounts related to him would be legitimate.

According to Zaheen, the unanimous decision was made at a meeting at which JSC President, Supreme Court's Judge Abdulla Areef and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed were present.

He declared that Chief Judge Hassan Saeed was suspended regarding a matter the committee was investigating, and the decision was also unanimous.

“The investigative committee decided that for the investigation to proceed, he had to be suspended. It was decided after much debate”.

Zaheen mentioned that a matter involving the Civil Court was also being investigated. However, as it was still in the initial stages, no further details were provided.

Supreme Court's Judge Abdulla Didi was appointed the position last year after two slots freed up. He was the former Chief Judge at the High Court and a former Criminal Court Judge.

Family Court's Chief Judge Hassan Saeed was suspended previously in an unrelated matter. The suspension was lifted after a significant amount of time.
