Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced the 212th COVID-19 fatality in Maldives.
According to the agency, this is the first COVID death of July. HPA said an 81 year old Maldivian man had passed away this around dawn today, in Gaafu Alifu COVID Management Facility.
HPA had also said a 90 year old Maldivian woman admitted in IGMH had passes away late last night as well.
A 51 year old Bangladeshi man brought to the Haa Alifu Atoll Hospital was declared dead on June 25, while a 48 year old Maldivian man admitted in Hulhumale' Medical Facility (HMF) had passed away on Tuesday.
Maldives saw a surge in COVID-19 cases in late April, shortly after the local council elections were held on the tenth of that month. May of this year recorded the most amount of COVID deaths, at 88. While the lockdown of the Greater Male' Area and inter-island travel restrictions that went into affect in late May helped control the COVID cases, June still had a significant amount of deaths, at 50.
Prior to this surge, the most amount of COVID fatalities in a month was in February 2021, at ten deaths.
The lockdown in Male' area is lifted from today onwards. However, a curfew will start from 8:00 pm to 4:00 am, in which period individuals are required to get police permits to be in public places.
Currently there have been 73,798 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Maldives. There are 3,602 active cases.
